Sculptra™ is an injectable volumising treatment that stimulates the build up of the body's own collagen to smooth out lines and wrinkles and restore lost facial volume to give you a fuller, younger-looking face. The Sculptra injection has been used throughout Europe since 1999 to improve the appearance of aging skin folds, indented chin surfaces, hollowed cheeks, and sunken eyes. The Sculptra filler provides up to 80 percent improvement in the treated areas. It produces results that are fully evident in three to six treatment sessions and lasts up to two years.

How Does Sculptra® Work?

Sculptra is a synthetic Poly-L-lactic acid material. The material has been commonly used in dissolvable stitches and soft tissue implants. A natural form of Poly-L-lactic acid is produced in our muscles during exercise. The material works to gradually produce increasing thickness of the skin. The material is biocompatible and can be dissolved by the body.

The microscopic Sculptra® crystals induce a mild inflammatory reaction under the skin where they were injected. This "triggers" the formation of new collagen — white blood cells surrounding the Sculptra® microcrystals recruit collagen-producing fibroblasts. Collagen production gradually increases, making the volume-enhancing results of the Sculptra® treatment apparent in about four to six weeks.

There is no downtime with Sculptra treatments. Temporary bruising and swelling may occur and typically resolve over a few days. Sculptra can be used with Botox cosmetic injections, temporary injectable fillers such as Restylane, FotoFacial® and FotoLift™ procedures.

Advantages / Disadvantages of Sculptra®

Advantages include:

  • Sculptra Treatment increases facial skin thickness and improves facial volume.
  • A full treatment can last up to 2 years.
  • Results are subtle, improving over time.
  • Polylactic acid is biodegradable and biocompatible. As the Polylactic acid is biologically inert, there is no risk of patients developing an allergic reaction to treatments.
  • Treatments can help patients with Facial Lipoatrophy show considerable improvement.
  • Sculptra does not contain human, animal or bacterial components.

Disadvantages include:

  • Sculptra treatment should not be used by anyone allergic to any of its ingredients, or who have a history of Keloid formation or Hypertrophic Scarring.
  • The effects of 1 treatment may take several weeks to manifest. Therefore a full treatment regime can be a lengthy process.

Proper use of Scultpra produces a more youthful, pleasing facial contour in people with facial ageing, wrinkling and loss of facial fat.
