Facelift

Ever wondered why a face-lift is such a popular and sought after cosmetic procedure? When a person ages, one of the places that often noticeably shows wear and tear is the facial area. A person's facial appearance makes a strong first impression. Even though they might not intend to, people often make conscious and unconscious judgments about each other, based merely on facial appearance.

A facelift increases the youthful appearance due to the surgical tightening of the lower three-fourths of the facial area. The saggy skin of the jowls, neck and chin-line are the areas that are especially targeted. The scars are well hidden in the hairline or behind the ears.

This surgery is performed by a plastic surgeon on an outpatient basis. The procedure takes from three to five hours to complete. A general anesthetic is usually chosen for use during the surgery with prescribed pain medication utilized during the early part of recovery. There will be swelling and bruising initially but should subside within three to six weeks.

Patients that are good candidates for facelift surgery are men and women in good overall general health without complicating diseases such as diabetes, clotting or bleeding disorders, heart disease, and hypertension. Your surgeon will also recommend that you quit smoking for at least two weeks before and after the surgery.

There are several different types of facelift surgery including traditional, endoscopic, mid-face, and mini to name a few. The type of procedure that is right for you and your goals may depend on a variety of factors. Discuss your questions and concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon in order to determine which techniques and technologies are right for your situation.
